Internet-based Smarter Metering

For the eTelligence Project, that was co-funded by the German federal Ministery of Economics and Technology, QNE delivered a series of internet based smart meters with, among others, the following features:
  • Fast Ethernet with DHCP Features and sNTP time synchronisation.
  • Single-phase resolved, 4-quadrant metering incorporating a total of 6 bidirectional metering registers.
  • Per-phase apparent power and voltage measurements.
  • SML-based reporting of instantaneous active and reactive power consumption for use in in-house user displays, full reports on each phase every second, readout in eTelligence over WLAN using an iPod/iPad App.
  • 32 day, 96 quarterly loggings per day of each metering register in the meter yielding a full industry-style quarterly load profile over a full month, with a very fast readout per SML.
  • Privacy and data security using military grade AES-256 encryption.
  • (on selected models only) Very high resolution, 15 channel simultaneous sampling of all power observables (P, Q, S, V, I, per phase, true RMS) with 25 samples per second. Hardware adaptive data compression and storage of high-resolution sampled data on 2 Gb SD-card, holding up to 3 months of data for detailed scientifical analysis of residential load profiles. Readout per Fast Ethernet. Note: for privacy reasons, this feature is disabled on all commercially deployed meters. It is tested only by a small number of consenting scientists.
Experience shows that costs for communication infrastructure are much higher than the cost for meters.
For this reason, QNE currently researches, developes and pilotes ground-breaking, high security, realtime yet affordable VPN Tunnel technologies with hardware accelleration and tamper protection that fully comply with current regulations for smart meter security profiles as specified by BSI and that are completely maintenance-free over a long time span.
